Distributors

The love/hate relationship many publishers have with their distributors could be more mellow with a better understanding of what is involved. All magazine publishers should expect some returns, and establish with the distributor from the outset how these are to be handled. Publishers could request full copies of dated publications back for future sale as back issues instead of getting torn off covers for credit that might just crack up any frustrated publisher.

The sometimes deplorable state in which copies are received back from distributors is not necessarily because of their negligence. Every time a publication is packed and shipped from one point to another, there is the possibility of damage that can grow exponentially, in addition to possible damage from consumers examining your piece at the local newsstands and bookstores.

When we have a overrun we always suggest that the publisher send extra free promotional copies to the distributors which can then be forwarded to new prospective retailers. This can make your distributors love you and you them when you see larger reorders next time around.
